Is up.

Anybody not see this coming?

Edit: Sorry, wrong title - that's #831.

"See? Stop trying to change the subject!" Classic Xykon.

I think a lot of people saw that coming. The ol' switcheroo.

Since Hardening is normally a Sor/Wiz and Artifice domain spell, does that mean Artifice is Redcloak's other domain along with Destruction? (interesting combo if it is)

Can you edit the post to change the thread title?

Crapola! I totally missed the last strip! At first glance, the last two were so similar, I passed it right by. Read today's strip at wondered WTF I missed, so went back. Jeebs...

I'm sick at the moment and the brain isn't quite working properly. Does this mean that there are 2 phylacteries, one real one and one fake one?

If so, do we know if the one Redcloak took off the Hobgoblin is the real one or the fake one?

Olaf the Stout

Redcloak has been plotting this for some time. He commissioned the hobgoblin "janitor," who in fact was a skilled jeweler, to create a fake phylactery identical with the real one. The box he took off the "janitor" contained this fake.

When Redcloak got word that the real phylactery had been found, he set a trap for the Resistance and took it. He's also been careful to eliminate all witnesses* and eradicate all evidence. Hence using summoned monsters to trap the Resistance, rather than his own hobgoblin troops; ordering the wights to eat Tsukiko and then each other; and disintegrating the "janitor's" corpse.

Now Redcloak has both phylacteries, real and fake, in hand. He's just been buffing up the fake phylactery with all the protective spells the real one has, to make sure the deception isn't discovered. He's going to give the fake one to Xykon, while he keeps the real one in his pocket in case he needs the leverage someday.

*Except the one Azurite who got away...

I can't help wondering if this is due to backfire on the heroes big-time at some point in the future, when they kill Xykon again, then make sure to track down his phylactery, finally laying him to rest with no possibility of return...

...not.
