I only mark those books that might confuse ownership, if somebody else also has the same book. First of all, I am not a collector, so while a mark in a book might devalue its collecting value, I care nothing for collecting, never have. Nor am I someone who sells their books when a new addition appears, I still have my beat up old 1e/2e books.

Back in 3.5, our group had several PH and DMGs, so those books I marked, but no other books ever past or present.

Usually, I don't mark them, though. I voted I did mark them (#1), but if there'd been a choice between sometimes marking them and sometimes not, that would have been closer to the truth.

Risk Legacy is helping me break out of the "never write in your books ever" mindset. I always write my names in them; I'm more likely to mark pages than I am to actually write in them. Really important errata is one useful exception.

I use sticky notes to mark important pages. I'll also put subtle marks in the corners inside the cover to indicate that the book is mine, particularly when I know there will be multiple of that book where I'm playing.

I used to mark and highlight my books willy nilly, but stopped once I made the move to pdfs. If I actually used the books more when I played, I'm sure I'd mark them up more, but in general the things I used to use the books for have already been moved out of the book to my laptop/DM screen, or are on my character sheet.

I love Goodreader for iOS. I have various game books and my character sheets on my iPad, and I can annotate them ad nauseum without messing up the original copy. 4e power tracking gets easier when I can tap my character sheet and put a big red slash mark across a used power.

I write my name in all my books because I got tired of losing expensive gaming books. When all books look the same how do you tell which one is yours.

I don't mark in them I don't use sticky flags anymore not since I found that they can tear when you remove them if you keep them in to long. Now I use different colored index cards to mark pages.
