Numenera's Limited License

Give yourself another point of XP boss man.Exactly and that is for PDFs. Those are at least mostly direct profit after DRMRPG.con takes their cut. An actual book has printing costs and more to eat away at the meager profit one might make if one hits the $2000 sales cap.

It would be interesting to know if that was gross revenue, net profit, or whatever. RPGNow/DTRPG takes close to half your gross revenue before you even start deducting the production costs, so you do have to do some pretty high volumes to get $2K actual profit.

I would read "Total Sales" to be Net, unless they are just wording it badly.

Publicizing these terms was an unforced error, IMO. They could have easily said: "we offer royalty-free licensing for low-volume third party supplements; contact us for more info" and avoided leaving a bad taste in the mouths of people who would never have even thought about it otherwise.

It would have been reported pretty quickly anyway. At least this way they're being up-front about it, and can't be accused of hiding anything.

Besides, they're not WotC, so not the same tendency for everything they do to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

Bad taste? It's a perfectly reasonable license. It might not be one that everybody wants to sign, but there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't know that it leaves a bad taste, exactly. Disappointment is closer to the mark, for me.

Has anyone asked for a full copy of the license to read over? I'm curious what happens when the 2k limit is reached. Perhaps I missed it in this thread, but I didn't see anyone post it yet.

I'm guessing it's a license to limit people spamming out third party product, ie, to help keep some modicum of control and approval on 3rd party licensed product. But that's just a complete guess.

My ill-informed guess is the license can be bought multiple times for a product - in effect it becomes a minimum 2.5% royalty for secondary market products.

I don't like this because we can't make a wiki or a product that gathers fan creations without paying the 50 bucks, that's a really really big turn off. Some of the best reasons I enjoy playing RPGs is the fact that I can create and tinker, and I usually do entire game overhauls because I enjoy the mechanics. This doesn't let me do that which is really annoying. More info here... http://theninthworld.com/thoughts-numenera-licensing/

Again, I get that he wants to protect his game and all of that, but I have a feeling many many people are going to be turned off by this, of course I am one of those people.
