Barnes & Noble has posted pre-orders for the PHB and Starter Set, labeled as just "D&D".
Which is something WotC and Mike Mearls talked about doing.
There are already two versions of the game called "Dungeons & Dragons", which we refer to as "Original" and "Basic" to differentiate between each other, and distinguish between editions and the brand as a whole.
A unique name is handy for narrowing lists of products when browsing online, identifying the edition in catalogues, searching through Convention events, and even tagging forum posts. Even posting LFG ads might be awkward. If you mention you're looking for "one more for your D&D campaign" the very first question asked will be "what edition?"
What should we call this edition?
Should it be considered the 5th edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons? (And hope the follow-up isn't called 5th Edition) Or is it the 6th version/Edition of Basic Dungeons & Dragons? Should we just keep calling it "Next"?
--edit--
A possible compromise I've seen is dropping the term "edition" and just calling in D&D5.And since depending on how you classify "versions" there are somewhere between 8-11 "versions" of D&D out there, so we could easily call it D&D 10. Or... D&D X.
