D&D 5E Love the Halfling art

Sorry to stir this up, but I love, love, LOVE the halfling art for 5e.

I know the proportions are getting to some people, but they're a) close to standard proportions for hobbits in art before LOTR movies, and b) the 5e is an attempt to go "old school" as they move forward.

I'm not a huge fan of the reversion of gnomes to bearded old guys, especially after 4e gave the pixy-gnome such support, which imho influenced the PHB2 *and* Pathfinder to make the gnome as awesome as they could.

And I liked the Eladrin/Elf split, which seems to have gone back to the direction of the FR sub-elf-a-palooza (high elves, wood elves, wild elves, grey elves, gold elves, silver elves... not my personal cup of tea, nor does it make sense to me to make so many divisions).

But yes, I love the halfling art. They shouldn't be chibi hawt girls, nor the 3e Halflings-as-insane-ninjas trope. IMHO, for whatever little that's worth. Those have their place, but for the standard halfing I appreciate the movement towards Tolkien.

I appreciate where you're going with this, but to me, this image will forever represent halfings...

Ha! Funny enough, when I read the thread title, that's the exact same image I thought of. I prefer halflings to show that they can be bad ass too, and not just bobble headed kids.

*disclaimer: While I love that illio, when viewing it through modern lenses instead of my teenage early 80s self, I would not have a female halfling in such a docile role. If I were Jeff Dee when I re-did that piece in 2012, I would have made both male and female look defiant. That's just me though.

Completely agree.

I too love the new halfling art. One problem that I had with the way halflings were depicted in 3rd and 4th editions was the fact that they were essentially miniature humans. Without some other race standing next to them to give a sense of scale, you couldn't tell that they were halflings.

Sorry but I can't agree. I hate the tiny feet. I can live with the ruddy faces and big heads. It makes them different. But the feet look so ridiculously tiny like they are about to topple over. I generally liked the art in the book, but hated most of the halfling art.

For those of us without the 5E PHB, are there any sample images of halflings (and maybe gnomes) online? I love them both and would love to see the current iteration.

I ran a 2E all-halfling campaign set in the Five Shires of Mystara and in my 3E (now C&C) Ptolus campaign, I play up the fact that halflings and gnomes look so much alike that many people can't tell them apart (something both races have been known to use to their advantage). The only versions I've really disliked were the 4E weirdo dreadlocked river halfling whatever they were.
