D&D 5E Weird Monk Mentality?

Zardnaar

Legend
I am currently playing a Monk in 5E to test them out and I am not a fan of the class on a conceptual level. Cheesy monks based on Kung Fu movies from the 70's while the Sun Soul Monk is Street Fighter II/DragonballZ. I usually use the monk ki points to spam 4 attacks a round (level 6) and attempt to knock people prone via dex saves.

My monk is the way of fist monk or the honoured "Foot in Ass technique" as he explains it I am playing a LG comedian Wood Elf (don't ask). Think Johny Cage nut punch attack from Mortal Kombat.

Anyway the DM givie us an encounter vs some angry peasants. Fireballing the lot of them are not an option and there are a large number of them between them and a misguided NPC Paladin/Cleric types. With speed 50 I move 8 squares and use a ki point to use the disengage option, charge straight through the gaps, get between the Cleric and Paladin, stun the Paladin as he rolls a 1 on his saivng throw. stun him as well. Stun also equals incapacitated which means.... No charisma save to the nearby cleric either so I try to stun him as well and fail.

Eventually the Barbarian is up wailing on the Paladin and the stun wears off. Monk eats two smites and has 2 hit points left out of 47. AC 19 did not save me, DM rolled high. Monk beats a retreat, wizard uses the healer feat on him for 1d6+10 hp (14 regained). Monks turn again and charges back into the fight.

NPC cleric type flame strikes us, rolls rubbish. Barbarian is resistant to all damage except psychic in a rag, Monk makes a dex save and nature cleric use dampen elements. A massive 4 points of damage goes through and we clear house.

So yeah took a large amount of damage which gets promptly healed and sucked the tempo out of the DMs encounter. We played through he DMGuild temple of the night bringers adventure and I ended up the a Mask of Shar which lets you short rest as an action(more ki points+HD based healing) and give you a +1 bonus to hit for an hour. It has some sort of drawback I might find out about the hard way. The mask and +1 short sword are my magical items. Just get in there is the philosophy.

"Barbarian is resistant to all damage except psychic in a rag, "

Why is he resistant to all except psychic? Is this a house rule? In the PHB barbs are resistant ONLY to bludgeoning, slashing, and piercing damage.

The monk in my Campaign is a Shadow Monk, early on he was running laps around the maps, so I had to start making encounters bigger and adding bottlenecks, more difficult terrain....traps...lots more traps lol

Is this another Zardnar "5e is broken because of spell/ability X" thread? If so, I'm not seeing it...

Interesting story, but I too feel like I've missed the point...

We had a bard and barbarian in our party in 3.5 and we saw this kind of stuff happen too, (although the barbarian was a bit more of a glass canon in 3e as opposed to the incredibly resilient brute they are in 5e), so I'm not sure it's anything 5e specific.

To me this is the point of a monk - bypass the front line and rush the people hiding behind it, and if in trouble get the heck out of dodge. I don't know how it played out in 4e I must admit.

Finally, taking a short rest as an action is *reaaaaly* powerful, and Shar is an evil goddess. You will pay a steep price for that item...

No it's not that at all lol. I have no idea how to really play a monk but I am very aggressive with it.

It's squishy so not sure where the line is being to aggressive and stupid is.

I have used the mask twice. I should probably stop using it at some point.

Sounds like you did well in this fight - jump in, retreat when needed, jump in again. In a way the Monk is the "reverse-controller". He doesn't control the battlefield, he messes up the enemy *plans*. Suddenly the enemy group can't do whatever it wanted and has to save the wizard/leader/whatever in the back instead.

He can also make an exceptional scout. He may not be quite as stealthy as a rogue, but his capacity to get out of trouble is phenomenal.

And yeah, that mask... Maybe your character should be having second thoughts to be using an item blessed by an evil goddess ;)
