D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

They were categorically wrong about that. And should have known that not everyone played the same game and the WotC Ninjas weren't on the way.

To me with hindsight it feels as if it was GamerGate v0.1. And people actively enjoying hating.

Then you aren't trying to understand what drove the other side to what they were doing. You are just saying bad bad bad.

On the contrary. I tried to understand them at the time. I tried to understand them again when 4e was replaced by something I consider to be a vastly inferior game with the consistency of tofu.

And I came to the conclusion that they were hating on 4e because they enjoyed hating on something and found a sense of community doing so. They may have disliked it - but the idea the WotC ninjas would steal their books was always risible. As were quite a few of the claims.

Yes I'm saying it was bad. This was after trying to understand it and finding that when I was on the other side the desire to behave like that was something bad.

Notice how him disliking 5e and telling me about it doesn't bother me.

I think you portray sinister motives where they didn't exist. I think you portray fear about something that no one had any fear about. Sounds more like a fanboy talking point than a real argument.

No one thought WOTC ninja's would steal their books. No one started hating 4e out of enjoyment. No one continued doing so out of enjoyment either.

I don't think that's the full story. I think if you though that expressing your dislike of 5e (i'm not sure if it goes all the way up to hatred for you) could make a difference in you getting a new game in the style you more enjoy that you would do it. But that boat has sailed. IMO.
