Unearthed Arcana Why UA Psionics are never going to work in 5e.

It's quite simple, actually.

People want to feel superior to other people. I'm big into horror and everytime I hear the word "thriller" my mind automatically replaces it with "horror that pretentious people want to like"

Heh, when my students ask me the difference between the two, I say that horror leans on the supernatural and thrillers are crazy people. So, Psycho is a thriller (or Saw for more modern audiences) while Nightmare on Elm Street or It is a horror movie.

But then, I enjoy a good genre wank now and again.

Maybe, there have been a lot of competition shows I've watched though (Like Forged in Fire or the Kid's Bake-Off challenge) where the competitors are not only highly skilled individuals, but willing to work together with their competition, because it is more about love of the art than the prize money. I always found those to be the best.
Which leads me to point something out: all televised sport is reality TV.

I seriously doubt it. You don't have to, though. Because even if 30% do want 2e style psionics, that doesn't mean that all or even most of those wouldn't also be happy with something similar to 3e style. I prefer to be given a million dollars. I'd be very happy to be given $100000 euros. People can be okay with more than one style, so simply going by what they ask for as their first choice doesn't tell you the complete story.

If 5E psionics ends up being a form of spell casting with just psionic trimming, no, I will not be happy with it and will not likely use it. Watered down sorcery with tattoos and crystals is just not good enough, I will have to homebrew something instead.

Which goes back to the original point. People will NOT be satisfied with Euros, they want Dollars or nothing at all. For every option that can get 30% in favour there will be 70% against.

Sure, when I see one person post a contrary all-or-nothing opinion in a conversation making headway, it's only natural to jump to the reasonable conclusion that consensus is impossible.

There are always going to be people with all-or-nothing opinions. I tend to give them the attention they warrant relative to their contribution to the overall discussion.

That's fine. There are always a few who are hardcore with what they want. They are pretty much always disappointed since things change from edition to edition.

While they might add a gimmick like the psychic dice, the business case for keeping 5e with as few systems as possible is very strong; one could even argue that a good part of 5e's success comes from its straightforwardness. Even if 100% of survey respondents swore that they wouldn't be happy with psychic powers as spells, it wouldn't matter.

The only thing of consequence in the next survey is whether or not psychic dice will be the psychic gimmick mechanism.
