They’re spending two out of at MOST seven (maybe eight) non recoverable resources that are also used to raise your stats (including primary).

I see nothing wrong with that kind of investment (which also lowers your attack by 5 to implement) being as powerful damage wise as a second tier (rare) magic sword effect. Especially when the flametongue can cut that down even further if it’s a greatsword and they take a single feat.

I don’t think y’all are getting this.

at level 4:
it requires a +2d6 weapon for a sword and shield fighter with the duelist style, also using precision attack and having 18 dex/str to do comparable damage to the fighter with 1 hand crossbow with 16 dex, archery style, SS, XBE using precision attack

this stays the same all the way up through at least level 11 (I didn’t check beyond that).

*note this includes both PCs raising their primary stat as appropriate on the remaining levels.

Yeah, two Feats mean this doesn’t happen until at least 4th level if you’re a VHuman, 6th otherwise. Precision Strike costs a limited resource to use, and while the damage boost is definitely very good, it might not be better than the ASIs at those levels.

You only use precision atack when you miss by 3 or maybe 4. That’s a fairly rare event. It’s very unlikely you run out of precision attack - or if you do it’s very likely very near the end of the adventuring day.

I’m also factoring in the opportunity cost of taking the ASI’s.

in terms of damage that opportunity cost was factored in

this happens at level 4 and is already being compared to a sword fighter that raised his primary attribute at that level.

For two feats, locking themselves into variant human, and allowing the +2d6 only 4 times (at best) per short rest? Sure. ;)

Which is why I said I really don't see what the big issue is with this...

What does the feat count have to do with anything? I factored in the opportunity cost by including +2 str for the sword build at level 4.

That's not how precision works. You are incorrect that you are limited to +2d6 damage equivalent weapon 4 times per short rest. Precision allows it's benefits to be extended through the whole short rest because all it's doing is increasing your chance to hit on the 20% or so of attacks that need it to hit. Allowing it to last nearly the whole short rest.

Also you never actually answered my question ;)
Would you give a +2d6 sword out at level 4?
