D&D General The D&D Monster I have never used (or faced) and probably never will.

I was reading through a bunch of @Echohawk's fantastic articles on the history of different monsters in D&D and it got me to thinking about monsters I have never used as a DM or faced as a player and that I doubted I ever would (given my tastes and those of the people I generally game with). D&D has a lot of weird monsters that work for some games and not others, or that in some cases have been accepted by some groups as a just "default" to the game and thus always faced eventually, while that same monster is never even mentioned in some other group's games as to even discuss its inclusion would be absurd.

So my question is, what are those monsters for you? If you want, you can discuss why but "It just doesn't suit me" is a fine answer.

My answer would be the Catoblepas. It is just such a weird monster that doesn't serve much purpose - not even the purpose of "just looking cool." I tend to not use monsters with gaze attacks or death attacks Heck, I didn't even remember it existing past 1E, though from the history of it, clearly it did.

There are others that I just can't imagine ever using either, like the Loxodon (though I've used Giff 🤷‍♂️), or others I have only rarely come across and have only used b/c they appeared in a module I didn't have time to revise (like Perytons). Sometimes my impressions of monsters changes, for example the minute I thought of Loxodons I thought they'd be cool in a Spelljammer campaign, so who knows - but I am pretty certain about the stinky death cow known as the catoblepas

I am sure there are others that will come to me. This is coming from someone who claims the 1E Fiend Folio as his favorite monster book - so I have used some weird obscure monsters (my favorite, a flail snail with a fire template), but nevertheless obscure or common, what I want to know is what are the monsters you just never play with?

That would be a long list as D&D had a ridiculous amount of monsters I never used back in the way back when machine when I played Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition, and I think they have even more now.

I’ve used Loxodons, they’re awesome as wise elder priestesses and I figure that if REH can find a reason to put a man with a giant elephant head into a Conan story then so can I (that was the first Conan story I ever read too, so it must have influenced me).

I agree Catoblepas is a bit too weird to put in as anything other than background fluff, but I have used the Gorgon bull (which was the medieval version of the Catoblepus)

The one I’ll probably never use is the Fachan - because um? and the Rast (plus any of generic humanoid #53 - #4794)

and although I have heard people who think theyre great I’ve never seen any reason to use an Aboleth and have never faced one (although I have faced Skum and have used slime transformed creatures)

I would much rather use barbarian humans, lizardmen, or even xenophobic wild elves before I employed the Bullywug (MM, p 35). Frogmen???? Really? Run for your life! The frogmen are coming! Give me a break. The artwork in the MM makes it worst.

From the MM only (and I've been gaming since AD&D days when they had some really, really bad ideas...):

The feel-good hippy of the Underdark, this 7 hit point floating bag of air with a defensive skunk spray somehow thrives in a realm of killer dark elves, mind flayers, duergar, and demon lords. It seems to serve absolutely no ecological purpose other than to float around and soak up good vibes. They've been around inexplicably since 1981 (4E removed them and included them in an April's Fool publication), and I have absolutely no reason to use them...ever.
