I put this awesome map of the New Forest up on the mantlepiece. I know a lot of those places well (its where I grew up)! Obvs it’s a print; the original was made in 1930 but you can pick up these prints cheap online. I lived in New Milton (marked as Milton near bottom left).

Why's it called the New Forest? William the Conqueror proclaimed it a royal forest over a thousand years ago. Obviously the forest was there before then, and it's definitely not new now, but that's its name!

As for "Milton", it is now divided into "New Milton" and "Old Milton" since the late 1800s (and other bits like Barton on Sea, Ashley, Bashley etc).

Bournemouth (where I went to school) would be just off the left of the bottom of the map. Southampton (where I live now) is on the right edge, under the logo.

You can see a bit of the Isle of Wight at the bottom right.

I think Billy Shakespeare preferred the Forest of Arden.

NB, for them what don't know, Billy the B*std meant "new royal hunting ground - peasants keep out" when he founded the place.

So, did you mean to say that the original was made in 1830, before the New/Old Milton split?

I love that. Makes me feel like I'm watching a map of the Shire with the thickets and small burgs.

Would you happen to have a link to said print? I'd be down to buy that.
It's all over the place. Just google Pratt's High Test Plan of the New Forest and pick a vendor near you.
