I find it ironic when those same players who says ''nowaday kids have such a thin skin, you cant make joke about anything anymore, kids these day are offended by anything etc'' get angry because of a sad clown in a quirky fairytale adventure.
As long as you are making fun of older players, it's fair game.

Everyone knows that, and the little thumbs up prove it every time. ;)

That's Wizards of the Coast sending a clear message that they are confident enough in the new fans to keep the game alive. They don't want anything to do with us grogs anymore, so they can afford mocking us.
That would be... a weird take considering how they've spent most of the past decade bending over backward to nostalgia bait up to and including the current hype about Classic Settings (tm) coming back.

I can't imagine being upset about this, but also can't imagine finding it funny.

It's a dumb joke, not mockery. Perish the thought D&D should include dumb jokes...

This honestly seems very much like the old AD&D dad-'jokes' that aren't quite even jokes necessarily. I'm thinking Papers & Paychecks, sulfur and guano as fireball components, miniature pies for Tasha's laughter, and so on. Yes, clearly Tunnels & Trolls went even more whole ham, but bitd D&D/AD&D never shied away from being silly, irreverent, and at times deliberately dumb/corny/whatever-you-call-it.

I mean at the end of the day its a joke about ageism (lol those old gamers and their gatekeeping in D&D), which I suppose is on the low end of "groups not to make fun of".
