Of course. An underrated part of classic AD&D Rogue is doing stupid things like that. Because they couldn't really do anything else.
I mean, honestly, when dealing with somebody that creates Spheres that eradicate ya completely and is pretty much a nasty piece of work without proper weaponry/items to deal with, beating him Doctor Who/Planescape 24 WIS score style seems like the best way really.

A low-level party could get far if they were smart, until Acererak.
IIRC, you can get around Acererak by... ignoring him. I don't think the whole 'skull draining your soul' thing happens unless someone touches it. Don't touch it, it stays put. Then there is the 'dust turning into a ghost' thing, but again, if you ignore it, it doesn't do anything. Of course, adventurers not fighting the 'ghost running right at them' and ignoring all those gems on the skull might be unlikely...

Exactly. It's Sun Tzu in a nutshell. The Art of War is knowing when to fight and when not to fight. The correct decision here is not to fight.

Sure. I understand he said the words. I just don't "get" them. The DM by definition is all-powerful. Gygax could create any dungeon on a whim. Those words are nonsensical.

"You are attacked by 42 Orcusses riding Tarrasques. What do you do?"
To teach humility is a fine art.
