D&D 5E 5E Product Chart - Updated 4/21/22

Alright, so I've added Spelljammer and Dragonlance to my product chart. You'll note a few things that I'm taking a bit of liberty on:

  1. that I'm color-coding Dragonlance as a story arc, because they're calling it an "adventure book" and presumably the adventure itself is primary, and only setting material that serves the adventure will be included. If we find out that half the book is "further adventures in Krynn," then I might change it to the color of a setting book.
  2. I created a new color code for the Spelljammer product: "slipcase set," but I'm keeping it in the tonal range of the settings because Spelljammer itself is the dominant feature, even though it seems evenly split between adventure, splat, and setting. It is Spelljammer, for chrissakes.
  3. I'm including the Dragonlance "battle game" as a "related product," because according to one tweet at least, it is designed to be ported into the adventure and seems to be include 5E's mass combat rules. So it is kinda a D&D product, kinda a board game, from what I gather.

Here's the chart:

Alright, a bit of speculation. In the first D&D Live thread, there was some discussion (with @Urriak Uruk and @Parmandur , among others) about whether or not there would be a "sixth product" this year. Meaning, whether or not there would be five or six hardcovers (or their equivalents) in addition to Stormwreck - or if Stormwreck was the sixth product.

Today's announcements didn't definitively answer this question, but threw a bit of a monkey-wrench into the mix.

First, here is the confirmed release schedule for 2022:

March: Netherdeep
May: Monsters of the Multiverse (or Jan in the gift set)
June: Radiant Citadel
August: Spelljammer
October: Stormwreck
Late: Dragonlance

Now consider a few factors:

The Dragonlance "battle game." While on first blush this seems to be a board game, and thus outside of the purview of the chart, I included it for the reasons stated - and it also, in a sense, could be conceived of as the "sixth product."

Other the other hand...

Spelljammer is the August release. In that previous discussion, I hypothesized that if Stormwreck was the August release, I'd lean more towards only five products, because it would still leave the September and October/November traditional slots open for the two classic settings.

But with Spelljammer as the August release, Stormwreck in October, and Dragonlance in "late 2022"--presumably October or later, probably November), that leaves a big gap in September - and again, WotC has released a major product (hardcover book) in every September, from 2014-21.

I see two possibilities:

One, they're just moving the September slot up to August. So it does break an eight-year precedent, but only slightly.

Two, there's a mystery product slated for September (or possibly October). While this is a fun idea, it is odd that they wouldn't have mentioned it in the D&D Live - or at least hinted at it.

Now my gut says that there won't be a September product, that we now know the full release schedule for 2022 - which, if you include the DL battle game, is still substantial, and the largest we've seen since 2019. But I'm not entirely convinced. I think it depends upon when Dragonlance is slated for release. If it is October, then the chances of a mystery product go down. If it is November or December, they go up. Why? Because I just don't see WotC not releasing anything more than another starter set in the usual "hot months" of September and October.

If nothing else, it is a little dangling thread to consider...

My thoughts;

  • Radiant Citadel is coming in June
  • Spelljammer prequel adventure coming in July
  • Spelljammer books/slipcase coming in August
  • Stormwreck Box coming in August (Target only), general release in October
  • Dragonlance book and game coming "Late 2022"

I assume "Last 2022" means at least September, but I'm thinking it's likely October or later. That doesn't leave a lot of time for another product. It's possible to squeeze another in, but I think it's more likely that Dragonlance will be the last of the year.

That said, I would not be that surprised if we see a book/product release in December, January or February, which keeps in time with an increased release schedule.

Yeah, you could be right. But I think my last point still stands as a dangling question: If "late 2022" means November--and especially December--that's a big gap in the product schedule, from Spelljammer in August to DL in Nov/Dec. I don't think Stormwreck alone fits their production history for that period of time, especially with the August release. Meaning, if DL comes out in Nov, that's two whole "prime months" (Sept/Oct) without a new product, and if it is Dec, three months.

So I think when DL comes out is key:
Oct: probably not
Nov: maybe, maybe not
Dec: greater likelihood of a Sept/Oct mystery product

That said, I do think we're probably done, as far as the 2022 schedule is concerned. But by "probably," I'd put the odds at about 70-30.

I'd be legit surprised if we get anything else for this year after Dragonlance.
I agree - as far as taking you literally, that is, after Dragonlance. If there is an unannounced product in the works, it is somewhere between Spelljammer/Stormwreck in August and DL in "late 2022."

But again, I'm guessing 70-30 that the chart is complete for 2022. But 30% means I wouldn't be surprised, just more like, "Oh, that's interesting."

...and again, WotC has released a major product (hardcover book) in every September, from 2014-21.
I dunno - as you and others have pointed out, WotC seems to be far more in a mood to experiment with the release schedule than they have in the past - but from '14 to '21, the big September adventure release was the biggest thing hyped every year. Even with the Spelljammer release, I have a hard time seeing them give that up.

edit: I'd guess that the Dragonlance stuff, both the book and game, will be the November / holidays release.

Sure, but it would be strange for WotC not to announce or tease such a product now. It's not typical for them to announce a book, and then announce a book that's coming before a previously announced book.

They usually announce in the same order as they intend to release. So if there is another book, it's very likely coming after Dragonlance, not before.
