Maus is an amazing graphic novel. My parents bought it for me back when I was a youth and it was first published after Newsweek gave it a glowing review (thus propelling graphic novels into educational material in the eyes of my parents).

"In the Heat of the Night" by John Dudley Ball, that inspired the 1967 movie and later TV series of the same name, is frequently banned along with "To Kill a Mockingbird." Well worth reading, though I haven't read the whole series.

After taking a look at the ALA's Top 100, I'm recommending Vaughn's Saga and Satrapi's Persepolis. Both are timely, in their own way...

And for old time's sake, Burroughs's Naked Lunch. It's the first banned book I ever bought (at a mall Waldenbooks).

While not banned per se, the reaction to Bad Little Children's Books was so bad that the author asked the publisher not to do a second printing. Naturally, I made sure to pick up a copy as soon as I heard that (though it's by no means hard to find now).
