D&D General “Folk” D&D vs. “Official” D&D

You say "siphoning money from players who think they need them,"
I say "selling products to people that want them."
Indeed. I have enough RPG material that, even if I never buy anything new, I wouldn't get through it all. Doesn't stop me at least checking out the new releases - I'm interested in what's out there, and can be tempted to make a purchase. I don't need anything more, but sometimes I buy things I like.

First, I am so glad YouTube videos have adjustable speeds. ;)

Second, as a mass tweaker, one would think I am "folk". However, I hold the "official" as extremely important as well. So, like many I suspect, I am a blend of folk/official at about 65/35. I get upset when I see WotC taking the game in a direction I don't agree with and I applaud them when they do something I do agree with.

I have to admit that I already held this opinion so he was preaching to the choir for me but I like how clear and (relatively) succinctly put it.
Well, as he says himself, nothing's changed since 1974. D&D hasn't needed TSR/WotC since that point, TSR/WotC needed D&D. Official vs. Folk is a spectrum, with extremes at both ends but most gamers fall closer to the mid-range.

TTRPGs don't need D&D, either.

discuss amongst yourselves (or not)

"Kickstarters and livestreams can advertise your game to millions of people."

In theory. In practice, this isn't how those platforms typically perform.

Layout software is great... if you already have layout and visual design chops. And the game design advice you get on forums on the internet is usually going to be filled with disparate, conflicting voices, and worth what you pay for it.

This comes off to me kind of like, "If you move to New York, you'll be discovered and make it big on Broadway!" It makes a nice story, but doesn't really work out in reality except for one or two people.

It's nice being Folk.

Roger Moore salutes you!

Ridiculous. The neutral alignment doesn't exist. And if it did exist, it couldn't be an Owlbear.
