OGL games to check out before they possibly disappear

Are they going to disappear? Maybe, maybe not, although there are publishers who've said they're taking down their 5E stuff this week and others who are talking about tearing everything down.

Before that happens, some recommendations (and please, add your own):

1) Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures: A wonderful little game that emulates the Black Cauldron, A Wizard of Earthsea and other games with young fantasy heroes. It uses PbtA-style playbooks instead of classes, and as part of character creation, players roll on tables that connect the characters' backgrounds together as well as randomly generate some of their abilities. The result is a charming, low-power fantasy game with groups of wide-eyed young heroes. The actual adventures are also randomly (and sometimes collectively) generated. Flatland Games also has sister lines that do sword and sorcery adventures and "I'm too old for this crap" veteran dungeon crawlers.

2) Castles & Crusades: There are already threads for it here, but C&C is an alternate take on 3E, with the tone and flavor of AD&D but with a unified resolution system similar to (but distinct from) the d20 mechanism. Its design goals are similar to 5E, which it predates by about a decade. I ran this for years instead of 4E and loved the fact that I could take anything from OD&D through 3E (and realistically, 5E) and convert it to C&C more or less on the fly. The core PHB is all you need to play and is offered for free on the Troll Lords website.

3) Dungeon Crawl Classics: It uses the OGL but I suspect them rewriting the game (for the first time ever!) to remove OGL elements won't be terribly painful. DCC takes contemporary game design and wonders what it would be like if the original creators of fantasy roleplaying had all those design tools at their disposal. The result is basically a Heavy Metal comic, air-brushed van and black light poster come to life, with high low level lethality, randomization for every magic spell, crazy -- and normally one of a kind -- monsters, and melee types who are mechanically encouraged to come up with crazy stunts constantly in game play. More than a little gonzo, it has a devoted following and is one of the games to bet on surviving an OGL apocalypse.

BLUEHOLME, a Holmes Basic D&D clone may potentially be going away in the near future (the publisher has raised the possibility). You can pick it up on Lulu and on DriveThruRPG.
Labyrinth Lord 2E is apparently cancelled and the company's existing OGL games will apparently be pulled, too, which is a major blow to the OSR, as it was one of the foundational games.

I was saddened to hear of this from Dan, as I was looking forward to LL 2e. I'm worried about the future of OSRIC and S&W, as well.

While I've seen no chicken-little-ism from Onyx Path, Pugmire is excellent in play, OGL, and derived from a D&D SRD.

The Year Zero Engine is released on the OGL 1.0a - was free last I checked - and includes options from all of the d6-only Year Zero games.

Oh LL2E isn't cancelled YET. The wording was confusing but there's hope.

Last week I didn't take the OGL kerfuffle very seriously. But since then after looking around I hate to say it but I think the OGL as we knew it will soon be gone.
That would mean of course that LL 2e is cancelled. Mutant Future relies heavily on open content so it would also go. However, Starships & Spacemen never used the OGL, and Apes Victorious does, but doesn't need to.
Also notably I will still carry the Pacesetter titles. So it won't put me out of business but it will take away my best selling product line. I'm not sure what that will mean for Labyrinth Lord in the future. If it were reborn it would have to differ a lot from its current form. Things like the spells, magic items, and monsters, at the very least would have to be entirely reimagined.
So for now I'm taking a wait and see approach. Hopefully we'll have clarity soon. If this does come to pass I'll consult with all of you to see what you'd like to have happen.

Basically, we’re not affected except for Scarred Lands, Crossroads Continent, Legendlore, and Pugmire first edition. For those game lines, we’re waiting to read the actually-released license when it comes out, and we’ll do what we need to do to protect our properties and game lines. What those actions on our part may be really depend on just what the terms are.

I do suggest that if you’ve bought PDFs of those affected game lines that you download them from your DTRPG Library. If you intended to buy a PoD from DTRPG, or a physical book from Studio2 or IPR, I suggest you make that order in the next couple of days while everything is status quo. Things could change, even up to and including no longer being able to offer some or all of these game lines to you wonderful people.
