DC Announces New Movie and TV Plans

None of it excites me, not even good old Mr. Carter finally getting a show. Maybe I'm just too old; heaven knows I feel older than my 46 years. But I would much rather see a DC cinematic universe that borrowed more from the Bronze Age than anything in the last 35 years, what with all the constant reboots and recharacterizations. I honestly think CoIE was a mistake, even though I love Barr's and Messner-Loeb's Flash, Hawkworld, Man of Steel, JLI, and more.

I'll quit being a curmudgeon, though, if Booster's show has Ted, alive, in the present.

They could have still done Wally West as Flash and JLI. The others would have taken some work, but it wouldn't have been hard to have a Superman story that just reset his timeline, making Luthor a businessman, Krypton not a space Utopia, etc.

This is very true. For all the flame and fury, immediate New Earth wasn’t too different from Earth-1 (or was it Earth One?). I think even the writers and editors didn’t see too much difference at first, which is how Hawkman happened.

I am generally a fan of James Gunn so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but some choices just seem unappealing to me. The Authority was always an odd fit for DC Comics. For those who don't know they were part of a totally different company, Wildstorm, that was bought by DC and in general attempts to integrate them, or any Wildstorm characters, into DC comics haven't worked. Maybe it will fit better into the movie plans. The Brave and The Bold is supposed to include Batman's son, Damien, who I hate with the fire of a thousand suns, and so am not looking at all forward to it. Waller is another strange one, she is a very unlikeable character and can be great in small doses as a foil, but a whole series based on her? DC's animated movies have been generally really good and I don't see a need to integrate them into the new DCU, just keep them on their current, successful path. I read somewhere that the plan is for the DCU to span movies, TV, animation and computer games and that seems like way too much work to follow.

I really hope this isn't an attempt to turn the DCU into the MCU with a bunch of interconnected stuff and overarching stories. First, catching that lightning in a bottle twice won't be easy. Second, will it be able to compete with the already established MCU if it is good? Finally, I love DC comics (comics in general really) but we are getting to the point where there is too much superhero content and only so many viewing hours in a day.

Did you watch the video, @Hex08? He explains some of the stuff you have questions about. (Some of it you'll probably disagree with, though.)
Somehow I missed the video when reading the descriptions of the projects. Old age has made me blind, I guess? It didn't really do much to quell my fears though. I guess The Authority could work since we don't have a JLA in the new DCU (I think? The continuity between the old DCEU and new DCU seems wonky). I absolutely love the Warren Ellis run on that book, but they are basically the JLA made more aggressive and, if kept true to the original, I can't envision them co-existing with the JLA if they are reintroduced, but I could be wrong.

My two biggest concerns are my dislike of Damien and that the new DCU will be crossing over into all kinds of different media. I don't play much in the way of video games so the idea that I may be cut off from part of the story because of that rubs me the wrong way.
