I was one of the contributing authors!
Cool!! I bought it with the intent that it might be cool to run a short mini-campaign but I only read it in bits in pieces. Ultimately, I believe it was in a bunch of RPGs I sold in the earlier 2000s. I really liked the idea of a non-traditional campaign setting but like a lot of things I just never got around to running it. IIRC there were a few supplements to the line, think a monster manual and a regional sourcebook. Hard to believe that was 22 years ago, I feel old.

You can still find the Nyambe core book and a few supplements on DTRPG.

Another take on "D&D Africa" is The Mwangi Expanse for Pathfinder 2e. I've heard a lot of good things about it. I would think it wouldn't be too difficult to convert.

The original project mentioned on this thread appears to have a lot of promise. I wish the creators the best.

Definitey. I think one thing that has turned me off to WotC and 5E is that they either rehash the same old campaign settings ad nauseum or put out half-baked MtG setting adaptions for D&D. Correct me if I'm wrong, and this is just my opinion but they haven't really put out anything new or innovative as far as campaign settings go since I'd say when Eberron came out for 3E. The closest I can think of was the Nentir Vale which got little support.

While not African D&D, there are a few video games that actually explore the rarely touched "fantasy Africa." Probably the most highly regarded expansions for both Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 - Nightfall and Path of Fire, respectively - take place in Elona, which is a fantasy setting inspired by Northern Africa, the Sahel, and even Eastern Africa.

My fantasy Africa continent in my mashup settings campaign is called Nyambe and I have the Atlas book but mostly for my campaign it is a vague Southern continent and over time I incorporated a lot of Garund from Golarion. If I get around to reading it I expect to incorporate some Midgard Southern Lands and possibly stuff from Seventh Seas 2e that strikes my fancy. I have the 5e Wagadu PDF which is OK too. I really like the orc and serpent history in Nyambe.

I ran a Deepest Nyambe one shot using the Paizo Crucible of Chaos module and it was a lot of fun.

They're not particularly well known though. I can't remember if Songhai annexed one of them.
Last night I watched "Amina" on Netflix - about the rise of the Warrior Queen of Zazzau (largest of the Seven Kingdoms of Hausa land), it had prophecy, warrior champions, subtle magic and court intrigue - I enjoyed it and could see how it could work as a campaign.

Anyway three of the Hausa kingdoms were eventually attacked by Songhai and the rest forced to pay tribute.
