I find that Tolkien was strangely silent on this subject.

Particularly when it comes to dwarves.

I'd say Anime, Lovecraft, Religious Mythology, and Folklore, with lesser additions from Narnia, LotR, Sci Fi, and other early fantasy novels.

Honestly both are far from my favourite authors, but I have to acknowledge the powerful contributions of Tolkien on the fantasy Genre, even if it's over stated and simplified (it interacts with a host of other influences), the biggest influence from R. R. Martin has is more nudity on HBO (which I admittedly do enjoy, don't judge me).

Honestly I would take alot of D&D writers over either of them. Or Shadowrun. Interstellar Mage series. Robert Jordan. Brandon Sanderson. Many others.

That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy Tolkien's novels, but the video is right, it can be pretty dry.
