I've been preaching this since 3e came out. 
Gnolls (if you're going with the hyena-base) should be a matriarchial society, based on dominance through intimidation and strength. There would be a lot of rivalry between females, but I still think they would have more power than the males overall.
Females have the important positions. Whether you run gnolls as tribal 'savages' or as a seperate feudal society, the females are the chiefs or queens, the shamans or clerics, the warlords or generals.
I picture a gnoll male's position in society as servant, footsoldier and father. The only way for them to gain some modicum of position & power is either to prove themselves worthy in combat, or to sire children with a female who has a strong position in society. If that's the case, I can see removing his ability to father children as a major form of punishment for disobedient males.
