Dire HOG! Story from the news!

The perspective is distorting the apparent size of the hog. Notice that the man is standing in a hole. One leg is out of the hole and his knee is bent. Also, there is no actual proof of the hog's weight. Only one guy's vague guess. It might have weighed closer to 800 pounds and be more like 10 feet long.

However, I think even that is suspect as they have no proof other than the photo. The article also says the hog was buried on the plantation, but yet they "have no proof?" Can't they dig it up again?

I'm not saying its a hoax, but perhaps an exaggeration. The lack of proof is also suspicious.

The story does talk about another hog from a few years ago at 600+.
:p

I work for a Agri bank and we have branches in the area, I may have to see if any of my contacts know of this.

I would wager a large sum of money that hog is nowhere close to 1000 lbs. It is a trick of perspective.

The sun is reasonably high in the sky and we see bright blue sky through the trees. Lighting conditions are good. Unless someone mis-set the camera, there is no reason we should not use a small aperture --> broad field of focus. The man should be in sharp focus if he is anywhere near the carcass. His conspicuous blurring on a lowish resolution web picture is a screaming clue!

Note that any automatic camera that is not set for harsh sports photography will choose a moderate shutterspeed (ballpark 1/60 - 1/125) and easily give the expected small aperture in that light.

If these guys knew cameras, they would have forced a very small aperture and everything would be in focus. Maybe next time.

My guess is the hog is 10' away and the man is 50'. Hogzilla is probably a whopping 100 lbs. An respectable weight for a young adult feral animal but nothing to get excited about.

11/02/2004 FYI - It was reported in my local paper (The State) that National Geographic had dug up the hog and were going to be doing a show on it in 2005!

I would have scaned the story in but my little bro took the paper because it also had some stuff in it on Spurrier and the big fight. ;)

Ah, sometimes when you search you need to put 'quotes' around your term. ;)

Exactly how much money are you going to wager on that? Take a look at the other picture that was left out of the news article...
