1) Have the PCs start in the Land of the Dead. They are technically experienced PCs, but have almost no recollection of their past beyond their names...possibly what they did. Campaign Goal: Escape from the Land of the Dead. Campaign Subgoal: Recovering the lost parts of their souls to regain the skills they had in life (a.k.a. gain levels).

2) Run a "Recover & Rebuild the Rod of Seven Parts" campaign.

3) Run a FRPG version of the War between the forces of Heaven and Hell, complete with analogs of organizations like the Knights Templar, etc. The PCs achievements will have them "going up the ranks" of one side or the other, leading to their recruitment for "the final push." Additional fun- you can play out parts of the Blood War as well!

4) Run a version of Michael Moorcock's "Sailor on the Seas of Fate"- the PCs board a mysterious ship and sail the Million Spheres (alternative PMPs), doing great deeds. If you haven't read it, think of it as a cosmic version of the Odyssey/Jason & the Argonauts.

5) You may also find inspiration in this thread: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=102706&page=1&pp=30

Know what the campaign is about. Now "the campaign is set near a bunch of portals" sounds like it's what the campaign's about but it really doesn't help you as much as say, this drawing:

Wow, thanks! I have been thinking about it and that thread is helping alot. To clear up, my group is itself very very split. They are the remnants of four different failed/scattered parties.

They are ;
A CN Black Dragon Disciple, who himself leans CG, but due to the influence of his black dragon heritage and his intelligent sword has momentso f outrgiht cruelty

A NG housecat(formerly human) Arcane Heirophant

A CE Tiefling warlock/rogue with a major demonic leaning

A LN Gnome Illusionist/ Shadowcraft mage

A CG Elven Healer

i've been thinking about the planespotting idea from that thread...the question is what kind of item would be useful to both demons and devils in the blood war.

The DM's chewtoy PC wakes up cold and filthy in the gatetown to the Gray Waste, with no idea who they are, where they are, or what they're doing there, and only the clothes on their back, a greensteel sword, and a glowing gemstone lodged directly into the bone on their ankle.

Hey, it worked for me.

I'm one for sprawling plots, ancient secrets, and fiendish politics. Add in a cute fairy or pseudodragon, and an annoying imp, mephit, chaos imp, or even a quasit on fire, and you've got my previous and current campaign.

See storyhour 1 or 2 links for details.
