Many, many thanks to Trevor at WotC for getting this cleared up. He writes:

You may run online games via Skype, Google Hangout or play-by-post forum provided you to do not post or upload any transcripts from your playtest, upload any playtest materials and make sure that all members of your group have signed up to playtest through the official playtest sign up process.

Tell people, start a game, and go have fun.

Many thanks to everyone who weighed in on this topic. It helped get the rule changed.

So awesome! Just saw this come across Twitter a few minutes ago. Can't wait! Already working on getting an online session setup with some friends next week!

I don't have MapTools installed yet, but if I can get it running right, I would like to play -- if somebody else DMs.

Presumably the same prohibition of not reproducing any text. You can post a summary of your play, but you can't just upload a transcript.

The part I find strange is that I thought WotC never listened to its customers?

Yeah, but... if you're playing by post... how can you not post a transcript of your playtest game... if your entire playtest game is played by post...
