D&D 5E Out of the Abyss OOC

Sorry for holding up the show today. Quick question: Can Kago make it to Y18 with everyone standing around like that (seems like I read something somewhere about it costing 2 squares for an occupied square), or is he going to have to start shoving angels people out of the way?

S'no problem; it's the weekend. I'm glad this weekend for a slowdown in the pace for the better part of a day. Funny the way once you're a working adult the whole world seems to think you're worthy of attention and want you to be at every Christmas party, ever. I'm exhausted. Caseload, conferences, parties, kids' sports events, band concerts.

So, yup, confirming that a character can move through a square occupied by an ally. Doing so costs double movement (as if difficult terrain). Kago could move AA18 >> Z18 >> Y18, and would expend twenty feet of movement to get to Y18. This is probably a good place for me to point out that while a character can move through an ally's square, a character may not move through a foe's square. And a character may not move diagonally when there is an intervening wall (or corner of two adjoining walls) at the corner of the diagonal. For the latter rule, see PHB 192, "Variant: Playing on a Grid: Corners."

Okay, spend inspiration for Solace. (and since this is the first inspiration spend of the game, let me know if I'm pushing things; I understand if I am): for her move (and disengaging-type bonus action), can she...

[snip]

. . . rolls towards the Quaggoth, and the weight of her body behind the attack provides the needed oomph to pierce the creatures' hide. As she regains her balance, she catches herself acrobatically rolling over the railing of the staircase on which the creature stands.

(so she'd be at Z17, but on the out side of the bannister, holding on to it with one hand, the shard in the other hand), and so not able to attack in that position).

Right, so it occurs to me I want to externalize the decision on how cinematic we want the use of inspiration to be. I woke up in the night, couldn't sleep, read KS's post for Solace, couldn't immediately decide which way I want to go re: the use of inspiration, and fell back asleep after deciding to think on it some more in the morning. It's the morning now, I've re-read the IC, and I am of the mindset that my response in the IC will set precedent for the remainder of the game, so I want to get it right. I want ya'll's input on the use of inspiration. If we play by the book, inspiration can be used to grant advantage to an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. That's it, nothing else. However, this is our game and we can run it how we want. I inadvertently screwed up last night and told KS inspiration would grant 1d6 to Solace's attack roll (we'll let my error stand, though it should have been advantage and not 1d6). Getting back to the larger point, I have, in the past, permitted inspiration to let characters do all kinds of crazy stunts (like hanging from a precipice with a slavering quaggoth next to you, or pole-vaulting through the air to attack a foe, or any other number of cinematic special effects). How do you guys want to handle inspiration? Do you want to stick to the PHB and have it grant advantage to attacks, saves, and checks? Do you want its use to be broader? I will wait to forward the IC until all five of you have weighed in. This decision is a big one, and it's your game too.

Aside: there's no bannister on the cliff precipice. Drow don't need no stinkin' bannisters. Not that that changes the discussion...a character could, potentially, still hang from the precipice even without a bannister.
EDIT: took the icons off my map and had another look. so, yup, there's a bannister on that section (though not on other sections?!). stinkin' drow...can't even count on them to be consistent in their use of bannisters.

I'm fine either way -- and (since there is no particular urgency in this case, and the idea of spending inspiration was yours anyway: I am just easily tempted). I'm also perfectly fine saving it now even if there's a decision to go cinematic. (So we could go cinematic (no gonzo) and still keep her with inspiration unspent, so that the decision only affects future cases, and not this one.).

I like cinematic. It fits my DMing style better. So we'll do cinematic for inspiration. I'll be mindful, though, that we don't want said use to wind up unreasonable over time. It'll be "ask the DM if what you want to do is possible via inspiration." And, of course, if you want to use inspiration for advantage on an attack, save, or check you needn't ask because that's the core default.

In other words, cinematic inspiration will supplement not supplant core inspiration.

I'm at Macy's with one of my daughters for our annual trip to the department store to select a tree ornament. I'll do a post in the IC when I get home later tonight.
Kobold Stew, let me know if you're using the inspiration point or saving it. Or if you have a question, ask it so it'll be waiting for me when I get home? Thanks!

By the way -- I'm thinking more like the dude on the left of this picture than the guy on the right: pic-dump-580-2.jpg

And certainly not this guy: CBY11gf.jpg
