I have a black lab/husky mix and a German Shepard/mutt.

Two Pomeranians, one mutt, two birds, aquarium, and a hermit crab. The Hermit Crab is your best bet here, he makes little or no noise, only needs fed or watered every couple of days and takes up very little room, on the negative side, they are ugly and worthless for companionship.... I love my Poms but they are yappy, the mutt (half chow half Lab) is fat and lazy, he would be the perfect dog for somebody that wanted a 60 pound lap dog (unfortuantly nobody wants a 60 pound lap dog).

Pomeranians (and Hermit crab off to the side)

My beautiful girlfriend owns a pet care business and here's my rundown:

We have an Australian terrier x fox terrier who is perhaps the pluckiest dog imaginable. He doesn't like being bossed around by bigger dogs and has got into a couple of fights with 'em... We ended up having to drag him away. He's a 7th level fighter with the feats Toughness, Iron Will, Great Fortitude

My little companion of 17 years, a chihuahua x daschund named Pluto, died last year :( . He was with me since I was six years old.... That hurt. He was a 19th level rogue with +17 in Bluff, +9 on climb (he'd climb 10-foot high fences) and +76 on Move Silently (when he didn't want to be seen, you didn't see him).

Anyway, the dogs we are considering are: pug, boxer, chihuahua and a mongrel to be rescued from the pound. Kym's votes are the pug and mongrel, mine are the boxer and chihuahua.

I'd recommend a pug.

I have a Yellow LAb, she's really sweet, but they're really hyper, my dog is almost 9 years old now, and she hasn't calmed down yet.

Also, Bulldogs are cool little animals, they're so ugly, they're cute. It reflects very well on the owner that you have this ugly, drooling, meaty dog with you(my sister and her husband have 4 of em!). Just don't get a French Bulldog, it's not the same thing. Frenchies are much smaller than American and English Bulldogs.

I have a Chinook.
He's a great dog. Loves to play. But really does need to run around a bunch. As for trying to find a breed for yourself, poke around google looking for "dog breed selector". They usually pop up a couple tests/polls/questions that will ask what conditions you'd keep a dog in, and why you want a dog, and respond with a bunch of breeds that may be what you're looking for. It is how we found our pup.

Pippin is some sort of hound mix. I'm thinking coon-hound/spaniel, but I might concede to beagle if we could tackle the size issue properly. He's a smart dog and very mouthy (he always needs something to chew).

I'm the alpha in my home. He loves me, but respects me (because I control the food). My wife is boss too, but she is the preferred source of affection. Then there's my two-year old daughter--she can do things with Pippin that children should not do with dogs (take away toys, for example). I think he fears her. I don't blame him--I fear her too. My seven-year old is just above littermate status with Pippin. He can understand dog beahvior enough to know what that means.

That's key frankly, no matter what breed you get. Dogs live by different rules. You and your family (who ever lives in the house with you) need to understand those rules.

No dogs here.

I'd love to have a dog or two, just don't have the ability to care for them properly (small house, no yard to speak of).

I do have 3 cats. :)
