D&D 5E The 200gp Elephant Mount in the PHB

Does anyone actually let their players buy an elephant mount for 200 gp?

How much is the upkeep?

In my game that '200 gp' elephant is a draft animal with a high upkeep actually costing 2000gp (the same as a hippogriff).
I'd charge about 4000 gp for a fully trained war elephant (the same as a griffon).

And let me note that I actually like mounts.

Only in a geographically appropriate area....

So anywhere but Australia. Potentially more so in a fantasy world with dinosaurs and dragons.

Colossal dragons and rocs have to eat.

fair point!

Buuuut perhaps not all these species were tamable. Look at the horse vs Zebra for example ;)

...then again people ride freaking wyverns so...

Buying an Elephant is one thing, finding a place where they can travel, stable them is another. When it made sense I let them bring them along but huge creatures present problems that the party very quickly decides aren't worth the extra muscle. Try bringing an elephant in a cave. When the players who beat it on initiative have to move through its squares the novelty wears off quickly even if you have 15-foot wide corridors, to begin with.

The same could be true of horses.

Or certainly the T-Rexes in the new ToA AP.

I wouldn't mind. Feed them Goodberries and use Speak with Animals, so the Elephant has a good idea of what's going on. Don't take them into caves or buildings, and hope your DM isn't a dick and kills him every time you leave him outside said caves or buildings.

Sure. But the players better not expect to ever rest again.

Nah, they let your rest after 3 battles! But ONLY if you had 3 battles.

"Joe-bob, grandpa needs a nap, go wrasle with him or something or the elephants will get mad"
