D&D 5E Adopting Baby Monsters (Out of the Abyss)

I want a Barbarian Goliath to adopt a Gnome Paladin and ride him into battle. It seems reasonable to me, even if Gnome Paladins are fiends from the abyss that will inevitably try to betray and eat the Goliath, or at least chew his slippers evil-ly.

I my campaign, Stool grew up to be a brave Myconid explorer. Stool even showed up as a cameo in another campaign.

On the other hand, also in Out of the Abyss they outright took the red dragon egg for themselves. And that totally came back to bite them. The dragon ended up fighting Juiblex while they fought Zuggtmoy. Then they ended up having to fight a Slime Dragon (essentially a dragon skin filled with superheated ooze).

When we played Out of the Abyss we had Glabbagool join us for a bit. We it him when we encountered a large canyon with a rope bridge across it. While working out how to get everyone across we asked Glabbagool how it wanted to cross and it responded with just psychically projecting an image of it sliding across the rope bridge, no problem. As soon as Glabbagool touched the bridge of course it melted and Glabbagool fell into the darkness. So remember kids, just because a gelatinous cube has gained intelligence, doesn't mean that it is intelligent.

It's all fun and games until...

In my Out of the Abyss game, the party adopted Stool, but brought him home. They invaded the Hook Horror nest and took one of the eggs. When it hatched, they named it T.J. Hook-Horror. When it grew to full size, it was one of the scarier members of the party...don't know what it was, but it would consistently roll really high and critical hits. They started casting Magic Weapon on it and adding it to their front line. At one point, T.J. got dominated briefly and attacked the party, rolling 2 crits in a roll and nearly dropping the Paladin, forcing the rest of the party to run.

We had a blast with him! The party started speculating that he was possibly one of the Demon Lords in disguise...

My party adored Glabbagool. I think they would've rioted had that gelatinous cube died.
That wasn't quite the death of Glabbagool as we did encounter it one more time.

At the outskirts of Bligdenstone we encountered it. However, this time it mentioned that it was now dedicated to a new cause. It wasn't until later that we understood when we learned of the Pudding King and how he was controlling all the oozes in the area. Once we defeated the Pudding King the party was mostly focused on trying to get out of the Underdark once and for all so we then never saw Glabbagool again. We will never know the fate of that poor cube.

Baby tigers are cute and cuddly. But guess what? They grow up to be tigers. I know, I know "nature vs nurture" and all that. I also remember an article I remember a while back. A woman went to the vet worried about her pet python because it wasn't eating. Turns out she slept with it every night and it was sizing her up to see if it could eat her yet, it had stopped eating to get ready for it's big meal. Read about it here. (Warning: pics included are a bit NSFW.)

There are gray areas. Wyverns for example and are neutral. With enough animal handling checks you might have a mount. Or it might just decide to eat you one day. But anything with an actual evil alignment? Sooner or later it's going to go evil in my campaign.

As always there are exceptions to the rule.

I have henceforth sworn off adopting any and all baby monsters. That's because of the tragedy of Stool the myconid sprout. Suffice it to say that things did not end well.

So here's my question to the forum: Have you guys ever adopted a baby monster and NOT have it come back to bite you? Because rearing adorable infant monsters whilst on an adventure always seems to screw us.
One of my fellow players loved Stool. I found him a bit over the top. My character killed topsy and turvy because they made of with the single good boat. Some other guy has a little hook horror now but he is only temporary.

In the cmapaign where i DM the gnome illusionist has built himself a mechanical chicken. He collected some automaton parts. But the chicken is of course a bit chaotic and i admit, since it has a little fire breath "for attack purposes " :devilish:it might sometimes try to ignite things :)
