Thanks to the presence of the team’s most unusual member, Uncle Sam, the Sentinels also represent American exceptionalism in all its glory. He serves as the living embodiment of the United States. He captures the essence of what it means to be an American to the point where his powers appear almost magical and even whimsical.The media and the public find Uncle Sam a fascinating, if impossible to explain, superhero. He defies easy categorization or explanation. His powers are unlike those of his teammates or any other superpowered being. Put simply, when he needs power, he gains that power. He brings exceptional versatility to the Sentinels. At the same time, his eccentric nature seems ideally suited to this all-American group.
The superpowered team known as the United Sentinels of America enjoyed success during their first few missions, thus earning themselves a warm reception from the public and the media. Project Archangel, the architect of this new team, looked at ways the Sentinels could expand their reach across the country and tackle additional superpowered threats. Armed with the blessings of the U.S. government, Project Archangel formed an exclusive contract with Mannheim Industries to design and build two types of autonomous robots. These machines would provide backup and support for the Sentinels during major events such as natural disasters, mass terrorist attacks, or prison breaks. If the Sentinels suffered too many casualties or became incapacitated, these robots could provide law enforcement services on-site without human guidance.
