Point. Anything that lives at such abyssal depths would find ascending to the surface, or even near it, to be a deadly experience.

Well since I got scooped i figured I'd move over here. The main question you have to ask is not what is it but can we eat it?

Conclusions

This is the only thing that really bothers me about these stories.

Generally, this whole "wow, look at this neat thing" turns into nothing.

I never find out if it is some strange creature, a whale, shark, etc.

The news doesn't seem to follow-up on this very well.

I WANT TO KNOW! IS it Cthulhu or not?

That's normally because when they find out that it's actually whale snot that's not news worthy, of course if it's Cthulhu you won't know till it comes to devour your soul. It'd make a good Cthulhu game handout though, I'm sure you could build a whole adventure around, what is that and are there more out there.
