It’s not the first time they haven’t quite got the D&D stuff right. Doesn’t really bother me as much as some other stuff does (like Russians in full Soviet military uniforms hiding under a middle American town).

I think the general public will be more familiar with the term sorcerer than psion. That’s probably why they chose the former.
If anything, he’s more of a spell thief rogue since he’s really just channeling Vecna’s own power. I’m guessing he won’t keep the power after Vecna is defeated (assuming Will survives).

You’re mistaking season 1 Byers for young Will Byers who is featured in a flashback episode 4.This interview with the Duffer bros confirms that opening sequence with young Will in the Upside Down was a CGI face swap. Apparently Weta Workshop here in NZ did it!

Yeah, I hadn't gotten up to that point in the show yet. I've now seen all 4 episodes, so I know the "young Will" being referred to now. The Duffer bros did a fantastic job finding little kids who resemble Noah and Finn.
