I agree with your appreciation for Wrath, but I found HAT to be reasonably amusing as well.Wrath isn't a great film, but it's the best D&D film put out thus far for live action which was labled as D&D (animated...the cartoon is better, and if we count the Amazon ones which aren't official D&D, but based on D&D campaigns, well...I think that there is no competition which ones are better).
Each is of its era, I suppose.
Wrath is a scrappy 3x homage to “first edition feel, third edition rules”, with its references to Greyhawk 1e adventures, but in the homebrew-like Izmer on the verge of howling wilderness setting, much improved over the high magic oodles of CGI dragons Izmer in 2000 movie.
HAT feels very mainstream 5e to me - big budget, sometimes gonzo, light in tone/doesn’t take itself seriously/winks knowingly at the audience, Sword Coast as “the” D&D setting.
