D&D 5E (2024) Where Are All The New Books In 2026 (D&Dfans article)

There is no way that there were enough people that knew about, much less cared about, the OGL debacle to significantly impact the box office success of HAT.

HAT failed at the box office because as big as D&D is relatively speaking, it is still niche compared to things like the MCU, Star Wars or even Godzilla.
Terrible marketing, and positioned right between John Wickand Super Mario Bros., perhaps the two worst things for a D&D movie to try and be counterprogrammong for.

Also, the pandemic wasn't quite over yet: I did not go and see something in the theater for a full year and a half after HAT dropped.

This last bit doesn't track because the movies you cited made tons of money during the same stage of the pandemic.

D&D is not a huge draw at the theater. It's okay to accept that.

Yeah I don’t think the OGL crisis had any major effect on HAT box office.
I suspect the biggest impact it has was a high level exec at Paramount may have made an angry phone call or sent an angry email to Hasbro telling them to fix whatever that thing that all the D&D fans were angry about before their $150 million dollar movie came out.

I seriously doubt anything like this happened. Do you have a source?

They made certain choices, some love it, some hate it. I'm one of the later, I wasn't even able to watch beyond the first 10min when it was on one of the streaming services I subscribe to (I almost never go to the theater). And if anyone expected some blockbuster from a D&D movie, they were dreaming!

I think HAT is really good and easily matches mid tier MCU films in quality. But that wasn't enough.

It also just suffered from bad timing being between two hits. If the timing had been better it's possible it would have been more successful. Add in ads that made ot look more like another CGI fest, and even thing like putting D&D first.

But the OGL? Only a small number of people cared.

Also, the movie business still hasn't recovered to pre-2020 levels. Look at the yearly box office totals, domestic or international - global box office for 2023 was ~70% of what it was in 2019.

WotC has nominally gone back to a "franchise model" that they used before 2020. Before 2020, they didn't announce new products the year before; so maybe this is just a return to business as previously usual?

Just speculation based on the fact the OGL stuff was hitting mainstream news outlets, like the following:

You don’t want that sort of negativity surrounding a brand that’s about to launch a big budget film if you can avoid it.
