D&D 3.x Savage Species Stalking Spell, Wow.

Legend
I was reading through the Savage Species book when I came across stalking spell, a really good long lasting buff similar to mind blank.

STALKING SPELL
Illusion (Glamer)
Level: Sor/Wiz 8
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
As improved invisibility, except as noted above and that the creature is hidden from hearing and scent as well. The subject radiates silence to a radius of 5 feet and neither leaves a scent nor can be detected by the scent ability.

A spell that notably did not get updated and repeated in the 3.5 Spell Compendium.

An eighth level spell so only available at level 15 and above, but improved invis with no scent counter for 1 hour per level, so the whole waking day.

For the wizard to cast it on themselves I think the silence would mean no verbal components or command words so significant tradeoffs to its use for them, but it is a great thing to throw on the rogue all day in a dungeon or war where non flanking sneak attack can be really difficult to get and you want to keep the squishy striker alive and striking hard.

The silence for the whole day would in practice actually be annoying unless the target had telepathy and could thus still generally talk normally without writing things out and leaving notes.

Yeah, definitely one of those spells that would have been changed to 1 minute/level if it survived the update. Imagine an assassin with this cast on them, the 5 foot radius silence would let them kill their targets without any noise just moving from target to target as an invisible, silent death stalking throughout the enemy base.

As an 8th level spell, I think it’s fine. True Seeing can counter it…and by the time you get to 9th level spells reality warping stuff is possible. (Demi-planes anyone? 😁)
Nerfing it = sour grapes to me, so if I had concerns about it, I’d house rule it out completely.

It's kind of silly as an eighth level spell. An illusionist has better ways to ruin someone's day at that point than sneaking around invisibly without consequence.

Drop the level way down and drop the duration along with it.

I think mainly that the time would be reduced to 1 minute/level to bring it more in line with other spells that were also similarly reduced in duration. I was actually thinking that 1 minute/level would be the same as greater invisibility, but I checked just now and saw that it was 1 round/level. I think if I reduced it to that duration then I'd also reduce the spell slot required, probably to 5 or 6.
