What videogames are you playing in 2026?

Good stories in games are pretty rare, to be honest. Which makes sense, as a medium they are not really necessary, like car chases in a movie: nice to have, but a great movie doesn't need to have a car chase.

I started DOS2 at the end of the year and am still plugging away at it. I had to drop to Explorer mode, and I am running with 2 "lone wolf" characters instead of the party of 4.
Explorer difficulty is the best way to play DOS2, honestly. Explorer reduces the amount of engagement you need to have with the utterly borked gear vs. enemy scaling systems just to keep up, and that can only be a good thing.

The monk or theif rogue having to use a BA to jump makes it worthless to jump in combat, which counter BG3s general design of making terrain matter in combat.
Hardly. There's plenty of times even as a STR 8 Rogue where I felt Jump was a better use of the bonus action than Dash. It's only worthless to Jump as a STR 8 Rogue if you're in a battle with no elevation differences and terrain obstacles.*

* Until you get someone casting Enhance Leap on you, then even as a STR 8 Rogue you're jumping far enough to actually have the opposite problem of making Cunning Action: Dash useless.

Dragon Age Veilguard, for a recent example.
I’m not a big fan of the Dragon Age games - or at least I bounced of Origins hard and that’s apparently the best of the bunch.
Many Final Fantasy games but especially FFVII, FFIX, FFX, FFXII.
I’m not really a console gamer and the few jRPGs I’ve played were really not my thing. I do like me some tactical turn-based combat so I’ve wondered if some of the “Tactics” titles might suit better. But then I’ll probably complain about the thin plot and art style.

Appreciate the suggestions nonetheless.

The only game I'm playing that came out in 2025 is a remake of a game that came out in 1997. (FFT) Otherwise, I'm still playing a ton of Jupiter Hell and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate. Looking forward to Marvel Tokon, the Rance series... and I suspect we're probably not going to see Starfinder: Afterlight until 2027.

The first Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the best written stories in the entire Final Fantasy series and one of the best ever in a video game, period. Its recent remaster, The Ivalice Chronicles, is also the best way to play that game.
