Taylor Navarro Joins Wizards of the Coast as D&D Designer

Navarro was an Diana Jones Emerging Talent Award Winner.

Wizards of the Coast has hired yet another D&D game designer - this time UK-based designer Taylor Navarro. Navarro announced that she was joining the D&D team this week on BlueSky. Navarro notably was a winner of the Diana Jones Emerging Designer Award back in 2024 and has worked for Ghostfire Gaming and Evil Hat in addition to working on several DMs Guild projects. Some of her most notable works was contributing to the DMs Guild publication Journeys Beyond the Radiant Citadel and publishing Not Yet: A Romantic Duet TTRPG.

Navarro is the fourth D&D game designer to join Wizards of the Coast in recent weeks, with James Haeck, Leon Barillaro, and Erin Roberts also announcing that they've joined D&D in a similar game designer capacity. Additionally, Justice Ramin Arman was promoted to Game Design Director of the group.

The setting, including in the portion you could have downloaded for free, explicitly states the types of adventures that can take place in the Citadel itself. There are also rival factions.

A DM could choose to use the written guidance given about how to have challenges within the Citadel, or not. But when there is guidance against the 'utopia' claim and people ignore that, that's not a fault of the writer.

Buy a product then have to put more work in. When basic idea of product (preconstructed adventures).

Usual cheerleaders here *nothing WorC produces can be bas) but its not a well regarded product for a reason. To some extent Candlekeep, Infinite Staircase and Golden Vault all suffer from similar problem. They are all really a set of stand alone adventures.

They've added the thinest veneer of metaplot to string them togather. Poorly. Kinda feels disjointed little rhyme or reason. Candlekeeps adventures are very short 1 session type adventures but theres 3 or 4 goid ones and a few interesting ones you can salvage. Golden Vault better than with a decent proportion of quality. Infinite Staircase they cherry picked good previous adventures that have aged decently. Same as Saltmarsh. Yawning Portal similar deal.

So we have 3 books of greatest hits that have proved themselves and 3 books of newer experimental stuff. Only one of them really lands it though (golden vault).

The bigger adventures at least function better as a group. I like the anthologies better generally as each book has a few good ones are least.


Lists vary a bit but theres adventures fairly consistently top of the heap or bottom of the heap.Radiant Citadel usually in the bottom tiers.

Witchlight bounces around a lot. You love it or hate it I suppose.

Radiant Citadels not the worst. Its very mid though. Its better than most of the early 5.0 ones (HotDQ through to STK), Strixhaven, DiA. Near the higher end of C tier. Waterdeep ones also very mid.

WotC just not very good at adventure writing. Long form anyway. I dont think thats a hot take. Dungeon of Drakkenheim guys.

Outside ENworld bubble its not exactly a hot take either.
 

So the writer in question won an award as an emerging designer, was called a bad writer by people who didn't read her works.
The writer who was just hired worked for a couple top tier 3pp, was called inexperienced.
The writer worked on a Radiant Citadel expansion, so people slammed the work she didn't do.

The problem here is not with the person who WotC just hired.

I didnt say any of that however.

Its not 2019 anymore. Ive been consistent for a very long time WotC poor at making adventures. They can make good ones they're usually shorter.

Mearls even commented why. Its corporate and they get people to design sections and then someone gas to staple it all togather.
And its obvious in Radiant Citadel, Golden Vault, Candlekeep or Infinite Staircase.

Its not a writer problem its a WotC problem. Masked by great production values.

No your relentless positivity tone WotC is always right mentality is flawed.

When you automatically and mindlessly defend anything and everything they do its just as bad as the relentless doomers. If youre always 100% great or 100% doner and you dismiss everything that degrees with that viewpoint.

I dont care if people agree with me. I actually bought radiant Citadel (deeply discunted) because of ENworld.

A lot of adventures I didnt buy are also because of ENworld. Those beng Waterdeep ones, Black Obelisk, DiA and Strixhaven. Ive borrowed some off my players.

It's Ok to be happy.

Products I don't like don't get my attention. It's pretty simple. I choose to not be miserable about the games I actually enjoy. Why should I waste energy being a horrible person on the internet?
