Since most fast food workers that work the drive-thru window are also doing other tasks, like pouring drinks or working an easy cooking station, I don't think AI order takers are going to displace any humans and will actually improve service for customers.

I'm an AI skeptic, but I have a hard time being upset about this one.

yeah I was amused when I drove away, but experiencing it for the first time was a little discombobulating, just an unexpected detour in to the uncanny valley

funnily enough my reaction when reading this was to think "I wouldnt want a robot giving me a message' but then I recalled my last visit to a big shopping mall and absolutely loving laying back in a massage chair to get kneaded and rollered. Is a remote control massage chair much different? although maybe I'm just more comfortable with the robot being shaped liked a chair rather than our local Thai masseuse*

A month ago, an A.I. tried to take my order at a Carl's Jr. A worker had to step in when I decided to change the burger I wanted halfway though. Using the self service kiosks is the real future of fast food. They dynamically show you what you can customize your order with, upselling you faster than any spoken or synthesized word can manage.

A biographer shared a story about George Burns. After Gracie's funeral George said he didn't think he could sleep alone. Bobby Darren went home with him and slept in the bed with George. It wasn't sexual, it was compassion. A person just might want to have a warm body next to them. I never thought to ask my mom what it was like adjusting to not having my dad there after nearly 40 years.
I, on the other hand, would find it hard to have someone next to me like that. I'm even uncomfortable with a dog on the bed.

It's fun to laugh at people and to giggle at the idea of sex robots, but this could be a positive thing for so many people in lot of ways, sex just being a fraction of it.

Thank you! Yes, it would. It would be nice if it had arms to hug you with, I guess. And the aforementioned hot chocolate tap.

I guess wanting a heated teddy bear who hugs you but also massages you and also cooks and cleans is probably a bit too multifunctional. I mean, I don’t want an electric kettle that also brushes my teeth and keeps my ice cream cold. I can buy different appliances.

AI won't displace those workers, but there's nothing in a drive-through kitchen that can't be automated - McD and the others have put huge amounts of effort into standardizing everything to the point that the work is essentially automated already. It's just cheaper to pay someone to flip the burger and push a timer button than install a machine to do it.

But for each of the chains out there, there's someone (or several someones) with a spreadsheet showing labour costs going up year on year, and automation costs coming down year on year, and there will come a point where those lines cross. (Of course, that "someone" may themselves have been replaced by AI by now...)
