The Legend of Vox Machina is returning this summer. Today, Prime Video announced that Critical Role's animated series would return on June 3rd. A teaser was posted to Instagram and other social media sites today, largely teasing that the season would focus on The Whispered One, aka Vecna. Vecna served as the ultimate villain for Vox Machina in Critical Role's first campaign, although the pacing of the cartoon suggested that Vecna wouldn't play a major role until the fifth and final season.

Already confirmed for the fourth season is Wayne Brady as Taryon Darrington, a character originally played by Sam Riegel in Campaign 1. Other guest stars for the show include Kevin Michael Richardson, Debra Wilson, and Tom Cardy.

The Legend of Vox Machina is one of two cartoons based on Critical Role that airs on Prime Video. The other series, The Mighty Nein, debuted late last year and already has a second season confirmed.

Legitimate question.

Crit Role changed the names of the gods because they're WotC IP- Sarenrae>Everlight, Whispered One>Vecna, etc.

Stranger Things... didn't have to pay WotC a fee to name their villain Vecna, and if anything, Vecna is now a big part of WotC's brand identity because of that.

As such, do you think they will want people to call Vecna... Vecna?
In Stranger Things, the mind flayer, the demogorgon, and Vecna are not representing the D&D versions, but rather the kids reference the "real" monsters with what they know from their D&D games. If WotC decided to get cranky and litigious . . . I'm not sure they would be successful.

Critical Role is a dramatization of a D&D game, using D&D (and Pathfinder) IP representing exactly what it is. Does the safe harbor of the OGL protect an actual play podcast turned media juggernaut with an animated series adaptation? Maybe.

Stranger Things doesn't need to "own" the names mind flayer, demogorgon, and Vecna, as it's obvious to viewers these are just names the kids pull from the game and aren't actually what the creatures are. Critical Role, while somewhat dependent on WotC's game and has a good relationship with WotC, would rather "own" the characters used in their stories.

That's my take, at least.
