Well there are two special qualities of armor you should get acquainted with for this world: first, armored spellcasters don’t have their spells spontaneously fizzle just because they put on a breastplate. Oh, arcane spells are still hindered by armor, but it’s just represented differently. Instead of a percentile chance of spell failure, apply the armor’s check penalty to the caster’s spell DCs to represent the difficulty of casting while wearing metal duds. Second, all armors (but not shields) have a damage reduction quality (DR) that protects mortal points but not hit points. That means that when you’re down on hp, or you take a critical hit, armor just might save your life by absorbing a few points of damage. The DR values for common armor types are given above. Note that the armor’s standard AC bonus still applies, but this represents the armor’s ability to deflect a blow. The DR is its material quality and stopping power. Magic bonuses to an armor’s deflection don’t affect its DR, but superior materials, like mythrill and adamant, improve an armor’s DR even when they might not improve its AC. Note that all DR has two numbers, the first of which applies to most physical attacks, and the second of which applies to gunfire if muskets and the like exist in your campaign. Dragonhide, while it doesn't improve the base DR, is never halved against gunshots.</p><p></p><p>Table 1-3: Level-Based Attributes</p><p>
Good Medium Poor Good Medium Poor</p><p> Attack Attack Attack Save Save Save Die</p><p>Level Bonus Bonus Bonus Bonus Bonus Bonus Feats Raises CP</p><p>1 +1 0 0 +2 +1 0 1st - 25</p><p>2 +2 +1 +1 +3 +2 0 - - 26</p><p>3 +3 +2 +1 +3 +2 +1 2nd - 27</p><p>4 +4 +3 +2 +4 +2 +1 - 1st 28</p><p>5 +5 +3 +2 +4 +3 +1 - - 29</p><p>6 +6 +4 +3 +5 +3 +2 3rd - 30</p><p>7 +7 +5 +3 +5 +4 +2 - - 31</p><p>8 +8 +6 +4 +6 +4 +2 - 2nd 32</p><p>9 +9 +6 +4 +6 +4 +3 4th - 33</p><p>10 +10 +7 +5 +7 +5 +3 - - 34</p><p>11 +11 +8 +5 +7 +5 +3 - - 35</p><p>12 +12 +9 +6 +8 +6 +4 5th 3rd 36</p><p>13 +13 +9 +6 +8 +6 +4 - - 37</p><p>14 +14 +10 +7 +9 +6 +4 - - 38</p><p>15 +15 +11 +7 +9 +7 +5 6th - 39</p><p>16 +16 +12 +8 +10 +7 +5 - 4th 40</p><p>17 +17 +12 +8 +10 +8 +5 - - 41</p><p>18 +18 +13 +9 +11 +8 +6 7th - 42</p><p>19 +19 +14 +9 +11 +8 +6 - - 43</p><p>20 +20 +15 +10 +12 +9 +6 - 5th 44
</p></blockquote><p></p>
Graduated Ability Score Increases After you buy your ability scores, you may notice that the cost of each ability score is raised in a graduated fashion. In this setting, scores are increased over levels in the same way. Table 1-1: Ability Score Increases
*Score* *CP Cost* 14 or below 1 15-16 2 17-18 3 19 or higher 4
Players earn character points (CP) as they advance, at a rate of one per level. The cost of a stat increase is the same as the graduated point buy, so raising a stat below 14 costs one point, raising a 14 to 15 or a 15 to 16 costs two points, and so forth. Armor & Defense There’s a final little rule regarding keeping your hero alive long enough to enjoy all the treasure he’s sure to find on he many adventures. In this cinematic setting, not everyone wants to wear plate armor. In fact, there’s probably a number advantage for not doing so - your skills and spells don’t get fuddled up, and you don’t clank or rust so much. That’s why all the classes in this game have an inherent Defense Bonus equal to their Reflex save + 2. You only add the defense bonus when not wearing armor, but it usually makes for a higher AC anyway.
