But its definitely not an OSR game in the sense that it doesn't care about recreating the mechanics and grittiness of old school D&D. But I think it gets some of the feel right. That feeling of freedom. That your PC can do anything that isn't defined by your sheet. A reversal from 3.5 and 4e where it sometimes feels like you can't do anything that is not defined on your sheet. Obviously, YMMV, but I love it.
There is a multi-page thread here on RPG.net about it. I LOVE the game. As Morrus said, its the best of 4e and 3e with some streamling and narrative friendly rules added on. As one RPG.net poster put it, its the spiritual successor to the Rules Cyclopedia. Obviously, my take is my own, but to me it feels like classic 1e AD&D or Basic D&D, but with modern streamlined mechanics based on 3e and 4e. Combat is super quick and smooth, and it doesn't use minis. Read that thread above for a more detailed take from different people. I will say this though, the game doesn't care about simulation, or gritty realism. PCs are assumed to be cinematic heroes. As I have said before, the game really speaks to me personally. As someone who enjoyed both 3.5/Pathfinder and 4e, but never truly felt completely satisfied with any of them, 13th Age just hits my sweet spot. Its also the first D&D clone/offshoot thats ever taken me back and made me feel like I did when I first started playing 1e AD&D when I was a kid. :)
