? I think we are in agreement, or maybe my memory is way off. But IIRC, in 1e movement is listed as "inches". For example, human movement rate = 12", where 1"=10 feet indoors, but 1"=10 yards outdoors. So you had these different rates based on being indoors or out. Rarely seen it make any difference, but two of firend I played with in high school were on the track team, and I backpacked, so we always had a real world knowledge on movement rates to use. Now we have the internet. Yep that's the idea. Other aspects of spell segments are in the PHB after the spells. But again, if you use the 2D6 initiative you're all set. One initiative variant I recall was adding spell casting time in segements to an initiative roll, with your 2D6 appraoch that might scale nicely. One I'm thinking the monks attack on the thief table as dcas noted, I guess I missed the errata that they get the cleric table. Part of the low power was the d4 hit dice for monks, again recollection and this may have been changed in later printings. I agree that at mid-higher levels monks are a strong class, just at level 1 they (IMO) are not as strong as the cleric. A cleric with a good wisdom can start off with several spells, use armor and nice damaging weapons. And if role-playing is part of it, an organization to back him up if he is in good standing, what's not to like? :) OK. I think I'm seeing the trade offs here. Sounds good, I'd like to hear how it plays.
