D&D 3E/3.5 1e to 3e Introduction

But all of the 1st ed rules on ability score generation still required you to use them in order didn't they? I know every character I created until sometime in 2nd ed that was themethod used.
No. Method I allowed placement as the Player wished. There was a method that said "in order", but I'll have to check the DMG to see if it was Method II or III (or another).

So AD&D1 players will be familiar with the D&D3 method of rolling up PC ability scores. That's not something Spoony Bard will need to explain.

And since we are not talking about various house rules but core rules it only makes sense to point this out, IMO. It really is pointless to use house for any comparison since a DM could just as easily use the 3.5 initiative system in 1st ed or vice versa if he desired - toomany permutations.

no, at least one of the techniques in the DMG allowed for stat placement. others didn't.

the main one in UA was in order. but it gave you a variable number of dice (3 to 9) to roll per stat depending on class picked. but that was years after the DMG.
