2 quick questions about clerics....

Ice man

First Post
1. How long does it take a cleric to convert (spontaneous cast) a healing spell? ie. change a bless spell to a cure light wounds. One of my players insists that it takes a full minute based on a sage advice column in dragon but cannot find the source and I can find no reference to time involved in any of the core books.

2. Is there any limit on how many times a cleric can attempt to turn undead (other than his usual limit)? In previous editions, if you tried to turn and were unsuccessful you could not try again with that particular group of undead. Is there any similar rule in 3.5, or can you keep trying until you are out of attempts?

all comments appreciated...

1) standard casting time. think of it as using the energy of one spell to cast a cure spell. the cure spell doesn't take any longer. (same with inflict)

2) no limit. if at first you don't succeed, spend another turn attempt and try again.

You basically cast the cure spell as if you had it prepared in that slot in the first place. No real difference (except that you can apply metamagic on the fly, which then makes it a full-round action).

The sage says a lot of stuff that isn't in the book, but I'm quite sure, that something like the one minute needed to *spontaneously* cast a cure spell has never been said by the sage.

I guess the player read something like "A metamagicked spontaneous spell needs a full round action to be cast", thought a full round action takes 1 round (it does not) and still remembered from 2nd edition that a round was 1 minute... It's not in 3rd edition.

Makes sense i guess, since he has played the older editions and sometimes talks whimsically about segments, rounds and turns...ahh, the good old days.
Seriously though, thanks for the help guys and gals, much appreciated. :D
