The 5ed wizard is probably the only caster able to pull off a world domination scheme. The next one might be the bard but he would lack the punch to back up his claim if push come to shove. The sorcerer, of all the casters, is probably the least capable along the druid to pull it off. The cleric will be able to do it way easier than the wizard as the cleric will have a god to back his claim. But of the non divine casters, the wizard is the most likely to succeed. The wizard's spell selection and versatility is unparalleled and many forget that he will not be alone, ever! The wizard will have constructs, clones, contingencies, simulacrums and tons of protection to do it. Such a wizard will have/need decent charisma to convince people without magic (so no standard array but point buy would do). This will be the kind of wizard that will rely a lot on minions and allies. He will not be a megalomaniac that wants to control everything, these are the kind our players beats all the time. That wizard will have willing allies and they will share his vision of what the world should be. And that wizard might not be evil himself, lawful good can be obnoxious too in its tenets. So our wizard will try to eliminate potential oppositions with laws and minions. Scrying spells will be used along divinations to find the strongest and fastest growing opposition. And remember, that as long as the wizard protect the right and appears to care for his people (or his chosen ones) they will follow him. Good or evil, the masses will follow through fear or zeal they will. Even more so if the leader appears to be just and righteous. Being accepted as the natural leader will be the hard part, but if achieved that will be a very hard leader to remove.
