D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] CHALLENGE: Best way to hide/protect an item

lemke

First Post
I've been playing D&D3.5 for about five years now and recently in a campaign we've come across a lich's phylactery. The party is at level 6, and are trying to determine what is the best way to hide/protect an item from being taken away from us/made aware to specific parties (aka the lich).

Any suggestions? Be as creative as possible and don't discount certain magical routes as gold can always be saved, and time isn't the biggest factor. Don't leave out any specific class skills/feats that could be beneficial (ie leadership and having a cohort guard the item)

Place the phylactery in a bag of holding, and the bag of holding in a portable hole. Per the SRD this renders the objects "forever lost".

Multiple stage plan:

1. Owe someone an enormous favor (or perhaps multiple favors) to let you store the phylactery in a Secret Chest, re-storing it each 60 days until you are ready to crush the phylactery. Extradimensional storage, your friend for nondetection.

2. Get to a city with Dwarves, or at minimum, a smithy that can work Adamantine.

3. Secretly commission a vice made of diamonds and Adamantine that can accommodate the phylactery and, once constructed, crush the Phylactery from existence (the metal ensures the vice will stay together in the process, the diamonds ensure you're using a harder material than the phylactery).

A less guaranteed method is to hire a Gnomish Rocketeer to overfly the Tarrasque and airdrop the phylactery, wrapped in meat, into its enormous, slavering maw. Considerably speedier, though. Do not attempt if you need to liberate the Tarrasque in order to put this into motion.

Singer of Concordance PRC in Races of the Dragon gets you your own private demi-plane. Granted you would need like a 5th level dragon blooded cleric and then the whole 10 levels of the PRC to get to that point.....probably a better way to do it.

although your Demi-plane is non-accessible via Plane shift unless the plane shifter knows the demi-plane already. so thats a nice little added piece of protection.

Animate it. Animate Object turns an object into a construct. You can't use Locate Object to locate a construct...

Same goes for casting Polymorph Any Object on an object.

Why are you trying to hide the phylactery instead of breaking it?

Whether you need to retrieve it later or not will change the ways you should take.

Before becoming a lich, make a deal with an Epic Dracolich, offering "meals" and "riches" (ie: adventurers) in exchange for a safe place to reform and a place to hide the phalactery

1. Become a lich
2. Make your phalactery a bar of gold or platinum
3. Have the dragon cast Nondetection on the bar, so it no longer can be detected by Detect Magic, while you then cast Permanence
4. Hide in the dragon's horde
5. Spread rumors of the dragon's immense horde and other nasty things, purposely neglecting the information on it being undead
6. Relax on the beach
