D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 Cleric of Heironeous HELP.

First Post
Hello fellow D&Ders! I am a bit of a newbie to D&D. In the past I have only ever played a Neutral Good Cleric of Ehlonna and a Neutral Good Druid of Ehlonna. I decided to break my normal barriers and try Lawful Good Cleric of Heironeous. However, the RP isn't working out so well, and the party does not seem fit for this kind of character.

I am travelling with a ranger naga (half elf, half naga), a zakya tribal protector (some kind of fighter I think?), a halfling rogue, a human fighter, and some kind of disembodied creature. Apparently this has something to do with 4.0 campaign with us all having grown up in Fallcrest together or something so it's not supposed to be a big deal that I know about all these different things/people/creatures etc. However, it's supposed to be that I did not know the half-elf (who shifts between half-elf and half-naga form and half elf normal form) can shift into a naga and that she EATS people. Literally eats them! I don't know what kind of penalties, if any, that she has for being a PC, but I just know she's a ranger and is pretty well powered (possibly overpowered).

I've been told by other friends outside the game that I should seek aid from the church of Heironeous, who should then provide me with a paladin or two, and slay the beast. But I'm not sure how to handle that. Is that really the best method? When I tried to bail from the group after seeing her true form, I got some RP laid out in my face about how I was paid for a job to perform (killing Iron Circle dudes to restore a Baron to his throne or something) and finishing that mission is the LAWFUL GOOD Thing to do. Again, not being as familiar with RPing this alignment, it's harder for me to argue it.

So my question is this... should I go to a church and seek out that help to slay a PC? Not sure how that would sit well with the group as a whole...

My 'quick fix' in this situation would be for my PC to complete the job he was hired for first, whilst keeping an eye on the cannibal PC and attempting to thwart her whenever she goes to eat someone. Militantly thwart her. Then, once the job's done (or next time we're in town near a temple of the cleric's god--whichever is earliest), my PC would turn her in and stand as a witness to her crimes if there's a trial. My PC would also be trying to gather evidence to prove her misdeeds. Murdering her wouldn't be "lawful" and would result, at least in games I'm used to, in at least an alignment change and probably losing clerical powers.

On the other hand, your PC could start trying to get the other PC to repent of her actions and stop, which is also an LG act.

Ranger? Overpowered? Compared to a cleric? No.

Finishing a mission due to being Lawful Good? Plausiable.

Seeking help? Sure.

Do it yourself? Possible with the right spells.

We are all newly level 3, after some fighting we did. However, one of the final men who was dying, the naga shifted out of her pure elven form and went half-elf, half naga. Succeeded in a grapple check and had him bound and tried to start swallowing the guy whole. I interfered and prayed to my God (because when I tried to leave, I blacked out and got the RP :):):):) kicked out of me by my God telling me I can't walk away from a man being eaten alive blah blah blah). So my cleric, she walked back in and prayed for her God's help and BIG SUPER HYMN crazy :):):):) happens and poof the guy is no longer in her stomach, he's fully healed and tied up, on the other side of the room, and the naga is now suddenly hungry.

Yeah, so, after that though, I would think we want to go to the church and turn her in. I have to do SOMETHING to keep her from going out and eating people all the time. And how does one handle this with a PC being the naga? Any thoughts?

LG does not mean unprejudiced.

Naga isnt a beast eating because its hungry its a int beast that instead of eating norm food is CHOOSING to eat sentient beings....what alignment are we talking here? Your cleric is LG and 3rd level, whats the parties alignment? specifically does the alignment change with the Naga? Whats the Nagas LA adjustment? Is it all monster levels or does it also have classes?

Something seems wrong here?

I would talk to the DM out of character and ask him what is going on. Is it okay for members of the party to turn in other members for punishment or even to attack them.

Depending on how your group plays it may be okay to play your alignment and turn on the other PCs or the opposite might be true you are expected to ignore what the other players do and find away to work with them without any PC on PC action.

If you are expected to ignore the wrong doing then I would change characters because role playing wise there is no way that a cleric of lawful god would allow this.

If taking on other PCs is allowed then I would go tot he church and tell them what is going on and help bring this PC to justice.

First of all, turn the party against it...if the DM allowed it, probably he isn't going to help much in killing it. Plus the only one able to stop you will be your party members...try to convince them that it will murder them in their sleep, or something like that.

A spell that you can cast and will help to make sure it is evil:
SRD:Detect Evil - D&D Wiki

And a spell that you can pay someone to cast it, or even buy a scroll and cast it yourself, if everyone else disagrees to kill it:
SRD:Mark of Justice - D&D Wiki
It wont fix the problem forever, but it will probably cost more to remove it that to put it on (except if you fail to use the scroll)

There are two components to your alignment, both Lawful and Good.

A Good person shouldn't stand idly by and permit a fellow human to be eaten alive. Your character should oppose (violently if necessary, since you're a cleric of a militaristic order) any attempt by the naga to eat any human. Something along the lines of "through any deliberate action or inaction may not knowingly permit this to happen".

A Lawful person would, well, follow the law. If you have a contract to complete, well, that's important. If it requires breaking the law to complete it is a different matter and the contract is probably null and void in your character's eyes (depending if Lawful or Good dominates their personality). Choosing to break the law in the execution of your contract is not an option. You should oppose anyone that you know is about to, or likely to, or is, breaking the law. Possible exception granted for laws that are "not good" (like outrageous taxation) depending on your particular character.

In the specific case cited, were it my character, I would have the cleric vigorously (and if necessary violently) oppose the naga eating someone. I would not break company with them or attempt to violate the contract terms. I would, though, lead by example and make conversation that borders on prosetylysing (sp?). Demonstrate how living a good life within the law brings peace and happiness blah blah blah.

Heironeous does like his clerics to get stuck in. I suggest that you compromise by trading away what doesn't matter to you. Ask the naga to stop eating nice and potentially nice people. If she wants to chow down on evil clerics, orcs, that kind of thing - well, you should make her aware of the health risks, but don't be cheap about the remove disease.

That isn't the end of your argument, of course. It's just a foot in the door to converting this semi-monster into a proper Servant of Good.
