Are you looking for a single class character or "Gish" multiclass options? Single Class Arcane Suggestions: -Bard can be customized to emphasize melee or magic. I have heard great things about the Snowflake Wardance feat from Frostburn. I have seen references to the Bard's Handbook before, see if that would help with what you're looking for. -Paladin of Mystra or Ranger of Mystra are those classes that use Arcane instead of Divine spells. Forgotten Realms, Champions of Valor p.34, Sword of the Arcane Order feat to switch their spell lists. -Glaivelock Warlock build, check the The Glaivelock - A Mini Guide for the build. -...I hesitate to put Hexblade from Complete Warrior as a suggestion, because I think it is a weak class, but it's another option. This is an NPC after all. Single Class, Non-Arcane suggestions: -Tome of Battle, Book of Nine Swords has the Swordsage class that has an Melee arcane caster feel. -Expanded Psionics Handbook's Psychic Warrior isn't arcane, but if you allow Psionics, it's great for that melee caster flavor. -A straight Cleric would rock at melee caster. Obviously not Arcane. -An Artificer could pretend to be a melee character and an arcane caster pretty decently, but it's a bit of work. (Some of my favorite) PrC suggestions: -Chameleon from Races of Destiny p.112. Be melee, Arcane, Divine, stealthy, whatever you want. -Master of Masks from Complete Scoundrel is not a powerful PrC itself, but allows for versatility to do a little of whatever flavor you want. Pick up the Archmage and Gladiator masks at level 1, maybe the Demon mask for the Summon Monster III spell at level 2. You'll be more melee than caster with this option, but you'll have some spells at your disposal. ...There's my 2 cents, no doubt others have more suggestions.
