Halcyon - I am almost positive that you shouldn't be benefiting from the addition of backlash damage to a long-duration spell. Unless I'm hallucinating, backlash damage is applied every round the spell is active. So unless you've got mad fast healing (and are sacing all of it for this spell), you should have a dead wizard on your hands. Regarding the low-ACed characters that BastionPress_Creech posted, in my (admittedly limited) experience, it's the nonstandard, nonitem AC modifiers that make a difference at epic levels. My 30th-level PbP bardja, for instance, only has a so-so AC normally, but he uses Superior Expertise and 31 ranks in Tumble (with the fighting defensively maneuver) to get whatever AC he needs at the moment. Alternatively, his epic Bluff and Hide modifiers mean that he can just stab most opponents in the face and immediately hide (as a move action), taking whatever -20 penalties he needs to sufficiently accelerate the process. My eponymous 40th-level mage, on the other hand, relies on moment of prescience and summoned creatures. With a ton of high-level slots and 5-6 spells/round (I went the Automatic Quicken route), he has no problems renewing his moment and using a summon monster IX or two every round to summon a clot of monsters to provide soft cover or use the aid another action. I suspect that even Fighter-types need non-conventional defenses (bare minimum - a cloak of displacement, but that's nowhere near enough) to survive at the really high levels. So base AC isn't a huge deal when you're epic. In my experience, it should be both fairly high and pretty flexible. At the very least I would expect high-level fighter-types to use the fight defensively action to fine-tune their ACs and make sure it lies within the monster's number range, if that's at all possible.
