The only reason you should've dropped that 14 down to an 8 is character concept. Oh well. Speaking of concept.... Great, you know you definitely want to play an elven ranger (hunter). Now start describing him. Start by deciding what type of elf you are. High (+1 int, + a cantrip)? Wood (+1 wis, faster)? Drow (+1 cha, some nifty other stuff & a considerable penalty when in daylight.)? (I know which I'd pick & I'll tell you what and why at the end) Regardless of what type of elf you end up picking, you start with +2 to your Dex. Since you've stated that you want to be equally adept at both melee & range, put that 18 in Str & that 16 in Dex. Because after the elf boost your Dex will be equal to your Str. 18 Str/18 Dex. :) Trust me, you don't need a 20 in either stat. You'll kill things just fine for a long long time with only a +4 bonus. The only reason I'd ever put that raw 18 in Dex would be to get that full +5 on my AC & Initiative rolls. But, as with the to hit/damage bonus, a "mere" +4 will work just fine. Especially considering that to go Dex would unbalance your being equally good at melee/range. So go 18/18 & let it play for awhile. By the time you're looking at the 2nd ASI you'll know if you should boost one of them to a 20 based upon how you've most played the character (or maybe what types of stuff you're fighting or gear{IE; weapons}you've acquired). Wisdom is important for a ranger. It's your casting stat and it's what Perception & Survival key off. So you probably want one of your 14s in that. Constitution = HPs & a lot of saves. Good thing you've got another 14, right? So that leaves an 11 & an 8 to go into Int and Cha. And that's the order I'd place them 11 Int/8 Cha. Because I value the skills that work off Int slightly more than the charisma based ones. It's not that I think Cha is a dump stat (I don't view any stat as a dump & certainly not Cha), just working with the #s left. Initial fighting style? Definitely two weapon fighting since this is one of your stated goals. So. What type of Elf & why? I see a Wood Elf. Specifically a Grugach/wild elf. And this will bump your Wisdom up to a 15 (it won't change the +, but that's still better than not decreasing your 8s -mod). Charisma wise? Grugach aren't noted for being the most personable elves, so an 8 Cha should work just fine.
