Ok, in the wake of the new Rogue preview, I'm going to throw out a prediction for how I think Ability scores, Skills, and attacks will work in the new rules. Every character has their base Ability score and then adds 1/2 their level to this base score. So for example let's assume we have a level 6 Rogue with a Dex score of 14. I predict that character will have a Dex bonus as follows: DEX 14 [+5 (+2 base + 3 from level/2)] This +5 is added to any Dex based skill the Rogue has. And based on what we know from SW Saga, Trained skills probably get an additional bonus of +5. So our level 6 Rogue would make their Stealth roll at +10 if they were trained in stealth. If they had another Dex based skill they were not trained in, the probably only add +5 to their roll. Ok, so anyone who has played SW Saga already knows all this. But now lets look at powers. The Rogue has a power called Deft Strike which is "Dex vs. AC" so I assume our Rogue makes his attack roll by adding up his Dex bonus and adding 1/2 his level, in other words he rolls d20 and adds 5 and tries to hit the AC of his opponent. This new mechanic also explains why all the DDM monsters have their Ability scores listed on their stat cards with 1/2 their level added in. This number is not only the modifier they add to untrained skill checks but ALSO the modifier they add to their attacks that are based on that ability score. So the big question I have been leading up to: Does the concept of BAB even exist anymore?? It seems like with this mechanic, all characters using physical weapons will simply roll their attacks based on STR or DEX (depending on the weapon?). Likewise, all casters will make their rolls based on the ability modifier of their relevant ability score. So a spell attack based on Int cast by a Wizard would have an attack roll of d20 +Int bonus +1/2 level. Anyway, thoughts?
